My name is Tim Corder. I started this blog in February 2007 because there were so few of what I considered good church audio resources available at the time for my team. Fast forward over 5 years and I'm still at it, sharing learnings about the journey towards making audio great. I go through periods where I post a lot and other times when I don't. I'm thankful for the opportunity to share it all with you. Thanks for visiting!
Tim, what do you use the 91 and the d6 for in the kick I know some people who just use the 91 for thump and others who use it for the click… And where do you position them?
Ditto on the Kick Drum placement question. Also, I’m wondering if you have the drums in cage (plexi-shield, etc.)? And how you do monitoring: IEM’s, Wedge, Butt-kicker?
Good questions about placement and such. I’m going to try my first video blog later this week and the topic will be drum micing. Hopefully I can answer with the approaches I use most often.
Regarding placement, our drums are almost always on some time of deck with varying height (8″ to 32″ high). We use a custom drum shield that I patterned after what I’ve seen at Northpoint and on American Idol & Leno. Basically a 7′ x 5 1/2′ piece of 3/16″ solid plexiglass with a 7′ x 3 1/2′ piece on each side. The solid front makes it look far less distracting then a Clearsonic shield (we own one of those as well but never use it anymore). Monitoring is IEM (cans or drummer provided IEMs), no butt-kicker or anything special. Drummers get a PQ mixer as the rest of the artists and that makes them pretty happy. Because we use so many clicks, wedges aren’t even an option for our drummers.
