Dave Moulton

If you’ve been around music mixing – either recorded or live – you’ve likely heard the name Dave Moulton. When I was a kid, I remember my dad subscribed to Recording magazine and each month, after he finished with it, I would absorb nearly every page. Reader submitted tape reviews, gear reviews, and techniques. Good stuff! Dave was a regular contributor back then (and I believe still is) but the biggest contributor he’s been to my career is through the development of the Golden Ears ear-training kit.

Today I ran across an excellent resource of many of Dave’s writings if you’re interested in some really good articles on advanced audio concepts and techniques. Most everything centers around recorded music techniques, but many things translate quite well to the live arena.

Here’s a few direct links to articles I would consider must reads:

1. Spectral Management, or Ways to Think About EQ & Mixing.

2. Kick Drum/Bass Guitar relationship. There’s just good input here.

3. Comb Filtering, Phase Shift, & Polarity Reversal. These terms are mentioned all the time in mixing but this article does a great job of explaining what the terms actually are and how to harness them in your mixes.

4. Microphone vs. the Ear. Why recordings don’t sound quite like the real thing and some things you can do about it.

Thank you, Dave, for such valuable teachings!

Countryman E6S Follow up

If you missed my initial review, you can find the video blog here.

After putting the mic through the paces for a few weeks and in one high profile service, the verdict on these mics is two thumbs up. Everyone can’t say enough positive about them. The drama team is ecstatic because they love the profile and fit. They’ve wished for an alternative to the lav or headset mic for literally years so this is a direct answer to their prayers.

From my perspective, I’m pleased with how they sound – very natural and transparent in a way that isn’t possible with a lav chest-mounted. I also like the fact that they are easy to make virtually disappear on IMAG.

I placed my order today to keep the two demos and will have to add at least two more into the inventory this summer!

You can just see the E6S over his left ear.  The most noticeable part is the cable coming off the back of his ear and around his head.
